Grief

Her shoulders
were so square and straight
you could use them
to draw a line
on the wall
that would put
a spirit level to shame.

She had
no form or majesty
but everyone looked at her,
nothing in her appearance
but everyone desired her.
She was despised and rejected
once
a woman of suffering
familiar with grief.
Now, people hid their faces
because she held
people’s desires
to account.
