The Fresh Expression of Church debate continues...

I am pleased to say that the Radio 4 Sunday programme on the 2nd January 7 to 8am will hold a debate on the future of the Church. Again, Moot will be cited as an example of what that might look like, drawing on an interview with Ian Mobsby and others of Moot following a Radio 4 recording of a Moot Service earlier in the year, so it should be interesting.

For those (like me) where 7am is not a particuarly conscious hour, the debate and feature will be streamed through the Radio 4 'Listen Again Service'. So click here and find Sunday Programme 2nd January 7am. You will need to have strreaming software (Media Player, Real player or mac equivalents).

Happy Christ Mass

Greetings of the season to all you Mootites and friends of the Moot community. Not that it sounds like we are a very healthy lot!! Thoughts and prayers to those with the flu, chest infections, sleeplessness due to new births, and poor Jonathan B who has Chicken pox from his kids. Hopefully this slowdown time might be a welcome space for some convalesence as a spiritual time.... see you all in 2005.....Space 1999 seems so far away now!! Ian

Poetry at Christmas with R.S. Thomas

Christmas
There is a morning;
Time brings it near.
Brittle with frost
And starlight. The owls sing
In the parishes. The people rise
And walk to the churches'
Stone lanterns, there to kneel
And eat the new bread
Of love, washing to down
With the sharp taste
of blood they will shed.

Nativity
The moon is born
and a child is born
lying among white clothes
as the moon among clouds.

They both shine, but
the light from the one
is abroad in the universe
as among broken glass.

Intelligent Design
You may not know it, but there has been a lot of convergence recently between biology, philosophy, cosmology and theology. A controversy has kicked off in many parts of the world concerning the theory of "intelligent design". At its simplest this theory argues that Darwin was wrong to suggest that inanimate matter became living matter through evolution, but that some form of intelligence is evident at this key early stage. This theory has suprising support from a number of highly respected scientists including Anthony Flew, previously an influential atheist philosopher. The structure of basic DNA is argued that at its most basic form, this is not something that could happen by chance, but is evidence of intelligent design.
Flew does go on to say, that he personally believes that it is a form of God described by aristotle - a God that is not interested in human activity or behaviour, so therefore very different to the traditional God of religion. The debate goes on....
This theory is now being taught in some schools. To listen to a radio 4 report click here or for text information where this has been discussed by a panel, click here

New Book: Feb 05: The out-of-bound church:
Learning to create communities of faith in culture of change

Steve Taylor, former pastor of Graceway alternative worship and network church in Auckland New Zealand, is bringing out a new book on the whole subject of Emerging/Fresh Expressions of Church. I have met Steve several times. Firstly in London when he was touring the world for research for his PhD and this book, and secondly when I was down-under two years ago, where I did some workshops on using Godly Play in alternative worship services, including a s service in Graceway.

This book draws on narrative research from the life of Aucklands older and Grandee of Alternative Worship, Cityside Baptist Church and in particular the wisdom of Mark Pierson, who set up led and has now left this church (I think) to work in Melbourne Australia.

The book should help all those interested in Fresh Expressions of Church, and in particular learning from the experiences of those who have in many ways, gone before us..... You can find it in Amazon by typing "out of bound church"

Went to see faithless tonight. Was another fantastic performance from Maxi Jazz and Sister Bliss (both pictured) and band. The atmosphere was electric - especially when they brought out the old classics. There aren't many better sights than Maxi calling the crowd to repeat, 'this is my church, this is where I heal my hurts. tonight god is a dj' - bloody fantastic! If only church was like this I would be there every week.

Faithless are a very special band - their fusion of pounding dance beats, gentle acoustic guitar chords and Maxi's spiritually, politically and socially aware lyrics make for a rare and special sound. I hope rumours that this is their last tour are unfounded.

Service @ Headspace & Moot Advent Party
Thanks to all for making this a rip-rawing success of the service and Christmas party. The Service went well, photos below. Sorry about the poor quality! For the party we had quests flown in from Mozambique, Cardiff and Glasgow. It was great to catch up with so many people. Some of you met Tom Beardshaw involved in Gracelands in Cardiff, see link below for their stuff.
There are services at St Matthews Church on Xmas Eve, and Xmas Day.
